LINK NETWORK FORUM

16TH MARCH 2010
MERCY HEALTH
ALBURY, AUSTRALIA

INTRODUCTION

An elective element of the Rural Palliative Care Project is the establishment of a palliative care link network within the smaller rural towns and areas. An integral part of the support mechanisms provided to the palliative care link network is the provision of an annual education forum. This report provides an evaluation of the link network forum held in March 2010.

AIMS

Allowing health care professionals and the community at large the chance to explore self care, self awareness and communication when approaching the realities of death and dying.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

-To provide an opportunity for link network members to reflect on their own well-being in the context of caring for people who are facing the end of life.

-For link network members to consider issues of loss, grief and bereavement when caring for those who are dying.

-Thankyou for the tools given to give me greater confidence to deal with patients and families questions.

-I wonder if when someone is dying and unable to communicate through touch if they are able to recall those first positive moments of love when held by their mother/father (assuming loving parents). And maybe this produces a feeling of well being. Perhaps an inner smile of warmth and love.

DISCUSSION:

The intention behind the link network forum was to provide a support mechanism for link network members. The gap analysis for the project identified health care professionals in our rural catchment area who were under considerable pressure and were providing significant support for the dying and their families. The nature of Liese’s presentation enhanced empowerment of participants to consider answers within themselves. The feedback received, particularly the comments received, reflected achievement of our aims. Therefore, with thanks to Liese Groot-Alberts, our intention of providing support for our link network members in self care, communication, grief and hope can be viewed as being an overwhelming success.
